Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Bread:

  • 2 1/2 cups (315g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk (or substitute with 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp vinegar/lemon juice)
  • 1 cup (175g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

Optional Add-ins:

  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
  • 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon for a spiced flavor

Instructions

  • Prepare Your Oven and Pan: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan and line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
  • Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, use a hand or stand mixer to cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Incorporate Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Alternate Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the bread tender.
  • Fold in the Chocolate Chips: Using a spatula, gently fold in the chocolate chips (and any optional add-ins) until evenly distributed.
  • Transfer to Pan: Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan, smoothing the top with a spatula. For extra flair, sprinkle a few chocolate chips on top.
  • Bake: Bake for 50-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If the top browns too quickly, loosely cover it with aluminum foil during the last 15 minutes.
  • Cool: Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack. Let it cool completely before slicing.
