Baked Meatballs in Tomato Sauce with Mozzarella

  • Author: Kimberly

Ingredients

Units Scale

1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 large egg
1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
24 ounces tomato sauce
1 teaspoon sugar
8 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, parsley, garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
3. Form the mixture into 1-inch meatballs.
4. Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat.
5. Brown the meatballs on all sides, about 5-7 minutes total. Remove meatballs from skillet and set aside.
6. Pour tomato sauce into the skillet. Add sugar and stir to combine. Bring to a simmer.
7. Gently place the meatballs into the tomato sauce, nestling them evenly in the skillet.
8. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the meatballs and sauce.
9. Bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the meatballs are cooked through.
